Mermaid Tails

In 2012, single mother Melanie, took her children on a road trip to one of Florida’s oldest tourist attractions, “Weeki Wachee” to see the famous Mermaid show and kayak down the Weeki Wachee” River to observe the migration of the endangered manatee.  After watching the Mermaid show, her then three-year-old daughter, Grace, wanted to be a mermaid more than ever. They went into the gift shop to see about purchasing a mermaid tail for Grace to play in.  Much to their surprise, there were no tails or costumes.  When Melanie arrived home, she researched the internet in hopes of finding some sort of swimmable tail to purchase for her Mermaid crazed daughter.  There were several companies that offered tails but they were either too expensive, lacked any creativity or variety, or they had heavy weighted “monofins”.  

 

Determined to get Grace a mermaid tail, Melanie went to her friend, who was a seamstress, with the idea.  Her friend has been creating costumes her entire life for circuses, cruise ships, Broadway plays, and local theatre companies. She jumped at the opportunity to help Melanie design and make the initial swimwear. 

 

After Grace received her mermaid tail and swimsuit she could not take it off.  She wore it to birthday parties, play dates and to Disney World to visit Ariel.  When standing in line, practically every mother asked which shop could they purchase such a wonderful swimmable costume?  It was then that the light bulb went off in Melanie’s head and she decided to patent the design and form a company. A year and half later, that company “Magical Mermaid Swimwear” has come to fruition.
